Large batteries used to power electric lift trucks can be hazardous to employees who handle, charge, and maintain them. Forklift operators and other employees involved in charging and maintaining batteries should be trained to recognize hazards and take proper precautions when working with batteries.
Although this training program focuses primarily on lift truck batteries, the same safety principles can be applied to smaller batteries used in cars and trucks, battery-operated cleaning and sweeping equipment, and even rechargeable power tools.
When the training is complete, employees will be able to:
- Identify battery hazards.
- Understand how batteries work.
- Charge batteries safely.
- Assist in maintaining batteries properly.
- Select appropriate PPE for battery maintenance.
- Follow proper emergency procedures.
