Understanding Hazard Communication and GHS – What Supervisors Need to Know

The basic goal of hazard communication is to ensure that employees understand the hazards of chemicals and the precautions they must take to protect their safety, health, and the environment. Now, under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), developed under the auspices of the United Nations, the Hazard Communication Standard will change dramatically, aligning local regulations with the international system.

The purpose of this training resource is to train employees on the significance and impact of GHS and to describe GHS-compliant labels and SDSs so that employees who now rely on them will understand the change and use them effectively.

When the training is complete, employees will be able to:

  • Understand why GHS was created.
  • Understand GHS and how it affects our workplace.
  • Recognize the information on chemical labels and safety data sheets (SDSs).
