More than 2,000 people annually are treated in burn centers with severe arc flash injuries. The Electrical Power Research Institute estimates that the financial impact of any such incident could be $1.5 million in direct and indirect costs. Victims of arc flash and arc blast incidents report that their failure to wear arc-rated clothing or face and hand protection, their use of inappropriate tools and meters, and their work on live circuits are unsafe work practices that need to be altered by improved hazard recognition training.
This training program provides information for “unqualified” workers or those who work around but not directly on or near exposed, energized electrical equipment. “Qualified” workers who work directly on such equipment can use this training program to help them supervise the work of unqualified workers.
When the training is completed, trainees working around exposed energized electrical equipment will be able to:
- Identify the hazards and risks of arc flash.
- Implement safe work practices.
- Identify and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Respond to an arc flash explosion.
