Trenching

The hazards associated with excavation and trenching operations are many and varied. An excavation is any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth’s surface formed by earth removal. Adding to the danger is the variability of soil and weather conditions, making daily inspection mandatory. Cave-ins present the greatest threat of injury or death to workers.

Proper excavation safety practices should be a priority on construction sites because a cave-in or collapse is likely to cause a fatality or severe injury.

This training program provides all the relevant information on Trenching.

When the training is completed, trainees seeking designation as “competent person” will be able to:

  • Recognize trenching hazards.
  • Choose the protective systems for trenches.
  • Identify the hazards and preventive measures for other excavation activities.

Excavation work may involve safety hazards not thoroughly addressed by this training program, including:

  • Work conducted on or around electrical utilization systems
  • Work that may impact existing utilities that may need to be locked and tagged out
  • Work conducted in confined spaces where hazardous atmospheres or gases could accumulate
  • Work associated with electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems
  • Fall hazards
