The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) estimated that in a recent year 384,000 workers in the healthcare industry were injured by contaminated needles or other sharp objects, and an additional 206,000 workers in all other industries were injured. Many of these workers suffered psychological stress and side effects from “precaution” drugs without getting infected.
Approximately 5.6 million workers in health care and other facilities are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV—the virus that causes AIDS), the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
This training program provides all relevant information on Bloodborne Pathogens.
When the training is completed, employees who are first-aid providers, maintenance personnel, janitorial staff, and any personnel assigned to clean up bodily fluids after an accident in non-healthcare general industry workplaces and who are exposed or likely to be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, will be able to:
- Identify the types of bloodborne pathogens that may be present in the
workplace - Understand the types of diseases that are transmitted through blood and
how they are transmitted - Determine whether they have been potentially exposed to bloodborne
pathogens (BBPs) in the workplace - Protect themselves from exposure through prevention and by following
certain procedures if exposed - Understand their right to medical evaluations
