Cranes are used at many workplaces, across all major industries, to lift and move materials. Crane operators are generally trained and often certified in safe crane operations and inspection. However, many accidents involving cranes are caused by failures of crane rigging and rigging hardware. This is why crane riggers also need thorough training in the basics of crane operations and the safe use of crane rigging equipment, including inspection of equipment. This training program will help trainees master the basics of effective crane rigging. Keep in mind that this is an introductory training; additional opportunities for learning, including proficiency demonstrations and hands-on training, should be provided.
OSHA requires that each day before being used, the sling and all fasteners and attachments be inspected by a competent person. Periodic inspections of their components may also be required. Inspections should be documented.
