Working Safely With Benzene

Benzene is a highly flammable liquid whose vapors can form explosive mixtures. Furthermore, exposure to benzene above certain limits is a health hazard. Short-term exposures may involve only headache or nausea, but severe exposures may lead to convulsions and loss of consciousness. Repeated or prolonged exposure to benzene, even at relatively low concentrations, may result in various blood disorders, ranging from anemia to leukemia. Many blood disorders associated with benzene exposure may occur without symptoms.

Because of the serious hazards of benzene exposure, employees who work with this substance must be trained to recognize hazards, understand expo- sure limits, and take appropriate precautions to prevent harmful exposures and fires. Employees should also know how to handle medical emergencies involving benzene as well as appropriate responses to benzene spills.

This training program provides information on Working Safely with Benzene

When the training is complete, employees who work with benzene should be able to:

  • Identify benzene hazards.
  • Understand exposure limits.
  • Use engineering controls, safe work practices, and PPE to prevent exposures.
  • Know what to do in an emergency involving benzene.
